First question: Have you ever said to yourself, “Snap out of it.” I don’t know anybody who, from time to time, hasn’t found him/herself feeling stuck, unmotivated, uninspired, or unproductive. Uncertainty, loss, pain, anxiety, and fear can impact all of us. This is normal. For those in the midst of one of these personal ‘power failures,’ we can be reasonably certain it will pass, and we’ll be up and at it again soon. We know we are just in one of those ebbs and flows of being a thinking and feeling human being.
Second question: Have you ever gotten so stuck in a rut for so long that you didn’t know whether you could pull yourself out? Where others are saying to you: “I’m worried about you,” or “you’ve got to do something.” And where you are saying to yourself: “I just can’t get it together,” or “I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” or “I would pull out of this if I could.” If you find yourself that stuck, you just might need a boost to climb your way out.
Depression is an equal-opportunity condition. It can strike anyone at any age. Generally speaking, you can tell when it’s got you in its clutches when, for most of every day for at least two weeks, you experience five or more of the following symptoms:
• You feel disheartened, sad, tearful, or irritable.
• You are markedly disinterested in daily activities.
• You experience significant weight loss/gain or significant changes in appetite.
• You sleep differently than usual, often much more or much less.
• Others experience you as depressed or agitated.
• You feel fatigued or lack energy.
• You feel worthlessness or excessive inappropriate guilt.
• You have difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions.
• You have recurrent thoughts of death and/or are preoccupied with suicide.
When symptoms like these are allowed to continue, the cost can be deterioration in personal, social, and/or professional relationships and functioning.
