The Santa Clarita Artists’ Association (SCAA) July 20, 2009 meeting at 7 p.m. will feature watercolor artist and teacher, Chris VanWinkle. SCAA urges non-member watercolorists not to miss this demonstration.

Chris Van Winkle will demonstrate making a painting from a sketch that was done on location. Chris says, “I will emphasize working from value, with a design plan, and with impressionist technique. I will bring some sketchbooks, some show-and-tell paintings and provide three small paintings for your raffle.”

Chris is a California artist with roots in Canada. His art studies include Ontario College of Art, Toronto; Citrus College, Glendora, CA; and the Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles, California. He has studied extensively with Robert Hallett and with the legendary Milford Zornes. He further studied with Robert E. Wood, Frank Webb, George James and Henry Fukuhara. Chris taught Yosemite and Sequoia workshops for the past 25 years and was selected one of the “top twenty” art instructors by Watercolor Magazine.

For the past 21 years Chris has been teaching watercolor at Citrus College and conducting workshops in California. He has traveled and painted throughout the United States and Canada and has led painting trips to Spain, Holland, Britain, Middle Europe and Russia.

An award-winning artist in both the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West, Chris is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and the Whiskey Painters of America. Chris has served several years on the board of the National Watercolor Society, and as president for three years.
In addition to eight one-man shows. Chris has juried many shows including the Nevada Watercolor Society, the South Bay Watercolor Society, San Gabriel Fine Arts, Watercolor West and the Arizona Watercolor Association. He has taught in Yosemite and Sequoia.

The Santa Clarita Artists’ Association monthly meetings are held at the Westfield Town Center Community Room, between JC Penney and the Food Court, and are instructive and inspirational. Non-members are also welcome and may attend their first meeting for free.
