As the epitome of the summer months, July represents a special time for our country. Not only are we the farthest from freezing during the winter, but as a nation, we also have a major accomplishment to celebrate. We feature the 4th day in July as the day when our ancestors began signing the Declaration of Independence in the year 1776. Due to the fact that Thomas Jefferson, President James Monroe, and John Adams all died on July 4th of succeeding years, this day has been cemented as the day the Declaration was signed, thus making it the Nation’s birthday. History tells us that the 1777 one-year celebration anniversary of the Declaration of Independence was akin to many modern American celebrations; replete with official dinners, sentimental speeches, and 13-gun salutes, the first celebration was a time for America to collectively breathe a sigh of relief and satisfaction over their accomplishment. With major parades and fireworks, America loves to celebrate in fashion. All of the major stores increase their supply of anything red, white, or blue, and homeowners tidy their backyard and prepare the barbeque. Plan away for the huge block party, but remember to work in conjunction with the Santa Clarita Law Enforcement so that proper permits are acquired. However, if you would rather relax and attend a community-oriented celebration, know that as residents of the Santa Clarita Valley, we are fortunate to have an array of activities to commemorate the occasion.
Beginning early in the morning, the Santa Clarita Rotary Club offers a low cost Pancake Breakfast. Be sure to attend the legendary parade tradition since 1932, in downtown Newhall! The theme is “Fun in the SCV”, and it begins at 9 a.m., so arrive early to get a great seat! Santa Clarita also hosts an annual Independence Day Classic 5K race or walk. Not only will you be enjoying a great exercise romp, but all of the money donations from the run/walk go directly to help maintain track programs at local high schools in the SCV. And then comes the event that everyone has anticipated with glee: The Town Center Fireworks Show! No Fourth of July feels complete until one can gaze up in the night sky and see the whole color spectrum bursting on display. Grab your truck bed or a patch of grass and leave the alcoholic beverages at home; this is a time for Santa Clarita Valley residents to gather together and watch in awe as fireworks are set off in a safe and controlled environment. This Fourth of July in the Santa Clarita Valley, remember the history of our nation whilst basking in the glow of spectacular fireworks.
