A crown covers and protects the tooth. It seals out plaque and bacteria and restores the strength and shape of the tooth. When a filling needs to be replaced, it’s often best to restore and protect the tooth by switching to a crown instead of placing another filling. When a tooth is cracked, it’s often best to protect it by placing a crown to protect the tooth and prevent it from breaking. A crown is an excellent way to restore a damaged tooth.  That’s why we recommend a crown to cover and protect tooth after a root canal treatment. When a tooth is severely broken down, there may not be enough tooth structure left to securely hold a crown. We use a core build up to replace the missing portion before placing the crown.  On your first visit, we numb the area to make you comfortable. Using the handpiece, we remove any decay and shape the tooth, so it will securely hold the crown. Next we take an impression of the teeth. The dental lab uses this impression to male an accurate model of your mouth, and then they use the model to create a crown that precisely fits your tooth and bite. In the meantime, we place a temporary crown to protect your tooth.  There are several types of crowns, including gold, porcelain fused to metal, and all porcelain. If your tooth needs a crown, we’ll talk with you about the best kind for your situation. There is other reason to have crowns for cosmetics, functional improvement of occlusion, implant restoration. We can discuss them in detail next month.
