If you or a loved one is feeling overwhelmed by a crisis, illness or the task of care giving, then a support group may be able to help you through your difficult time. Support groups exist that help with very specific problems, such as weight loss, the loss of a spouse or the effects of care giving for a family member with dementia. Other groups may be more general, focusing on a broad range like depression or coping strategies. The purpose of a support group is to create a safe and supportive environment where the group can encourage, share experiences, problem solve and educate each other. A support group lets people know that they are not alone, and there are others sharing the same feelings and experiences. The benefits of participating in a support group are many. It is an opportunity to talk and share feelings with others, without the fear of being judged. It is an opportunity to learn from others in a similar situation and an opportunity for personal growth and development. It is also a chance to form new friendships. Once you make the decision to join a support group, make sure that the group has predefined guidelines, such as confidentiality, encouraging all to participate if they would like, a safe and non-judgmental environment, and a defined time frame. A support group can be different things to different people, but you can always be sure that you will gain from the experience.
