Medical doctors prescribe drugs to create changes in the body’s chemistry and bring symptoms under control. All drugs have side effects. The sixth-largest killer in America is drug-related deaths. But there are times when drugs save lives! We need to be aware of the goals of drug therapies and whether or not there are safer alternatives.
Nutrition is another way to affect the body’s biochemistry. Unlike drug therapy, nutritional therapies have few (if any) side effects. Every activity in the body (digestion, muscle action, oxygen utilization, brain/thought function) is the result of biochemical reactions. Good nutrition ensures good biochemical function.
Nutrients are effective in treating illness because many symptoms are the result of nutrient deficiencies. Nutrients enable the body to function optimally. Vitamins, minerals, nutrition, herbs, homeopathics and other natural therapies (including dietary intervention/changes) can be very effective.
Many herbal and nutritional therapies are well researched and helpful for minor complaints as well as serious issues like autoimmune diseases, MS, cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular problems. Even when medical intervention is necessary, natural health care can be a beneficial adjunct.
But each person is unique and what works for one may not work for another. We all have predisposing factors creating our health and vitality. Working with a trained professional who has had years of training is the only way to know which supplements will be effective for you.
I have spent decades researching, investigating, learning and applying how to know which foods and supplements will be helpful for a specific person, how long that person will need that supplement and what dosage would be most helpful. Not all products are created alike. Why waste money on supplements your body cannot utilize?
Not all immune system problems are caused by zinc deficiency, not all muscle spasm is a magnesium deficiency and not everyone benefits by eating oatmeal for breakfast! What works for one person may not work for another (and may even impair functioning).
If you are not feeling as well as you would like, working with an experienced professional to fine-tune your program may be just “what the doctor ordered”
