“You have breast cancer.” Four dreaded words that change a woman’s life as well as the lives of those who love her. But finding breast cancer in its earliest stages can save a life — and the best available tool for breast cancer detection continues to be the mammogram. Digital mammography delivers quicker exam times, decreased radiation dose and less patient discomfort — and it’s available right here in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Women sometimes delay or avoid opportunities to take care of themselves due to busy, hectic daily schedules of professional and family responsibilities. But to keep up with daily demands, it is important to maintain one’s health and well-being. Now, there’s no reason for excuses to delay a mammogram — Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center offers a caring environment with dedicated staff, convenient appointments during the day, evening, and some weekends, as well as a welcoming, secure place for children to wait for mom.

During the month of October, patients who are uninsured, have high deductibles, or whose insurance plans are not contracted by Henry Mayo can receive a routine screening mammogram for the special cash price of $160.

Taken over time, mammograms provide a way to identify changes in the breast tissue, such as the appearance of a tumor. The Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center, designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR) in recognition of high practice standards and personnel qualifications, uses digital mammography rather than traditional analog mammography.

“Digital mammography is faster and significantly increases the ability to see very small abnormalities,” reports Terry Bucknall, BA, RT (R)(M), director of the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center. “It makes it easier to detect breast cancers in the early stage, and an earlier diagnosis increases the patient’s options for treatment.”

The SRV Breast Imaging Center also utilizes ultrasound technology, as well as breast MRI, which complements mammography in cancer detection and facilitates minimally invasive, image-guided biopsies.

“We have highly experienced technologists performing mammograms with board-certified and American College of Radiology accredited physicians to interpret the results,” says Bucknall. “We offer our patients a place to come to that is warm and nurturing. Our goal is to provide the best possible experience for our patients, performed by the most qualified staff.”

Scheduling is easy at Henry Mayo’s Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center with appointments available during the day, evening, and some weekends. Conveniently located on the hospital’s campus, the Breast Imaging Center has its own entrance, a home-like atmosphere, and friendly staff. The patient’s waiting area, located in the midst of the exam rooms, offers a secure environment for children, as well as snacks and videos.

Most women age 40 and older should have an annual mammogram to detect and treat breast cancer in its earliest stages. Younger women who have a family history of breast cancer or have a suspicious lump should also be screened. The following tips can help you prepare for your mammogram: Schedule your appointment for one week after your period when your breasts are likely to be less tender.  Inform the scheduler if you have breast implants.  Refrain from using deodorant, lotions, perfumes or powder under your arms, in the breast area, and on your upper torso.  Select an outfit that allows you to easily undress from the waist up.

The Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center does not require a physician’s referral or prescription for routine screening mammograms. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 661-253-8822. The Imaging Center is located on the hospital’s campus at 23929 McBean Parkway, Suite 101, Valencia.
