I often find it interesting the incentives that are put before us as an enticement to get us to do what others want us to. The best examples of this are to be found in the parent/child relationship.
If the kid keeps their room clean or attains a high enough grade point average, then some type of reward or, perhaps it’s even a bribe, is offered for this compliance.
The child learns that “going along with the program” is easier and more profitable than fighting the system.
So be it with the “Take the money and run” program that the L.A. County Sanitation District offered us to remove our environmentally unfriendly water softeners. By giving us a refund on the pro-rated value, we would be more willing to comply with the ordinance that is now the law.
The value of our automatic softener is calculated much the same as a used car being traded in; Kelly Blue Book value minus reconstruction and mileage on what the LACSD based on a 12-year service life of the equipment with a $206 minimum rebate.
During the cash for clunkers program, I was offered $4,500 for my 11-year-old truck and no discount on the new Toyota truck I wanted. The dealer was too busy and did not need to discount their product. Business was good.
One week after “Cash for Clunkers’ ended, I bought my new truck with a reasonable discount off MSRP and $4,700 for my old truck. All without the help of a government short-term subsidy program. Lucky me.
So let me offer some of you die-hard hold outs a little something extra. If you replace your automatic water softener with any Rayne product in the month of October, I can show you how to get an additional $50 to $150 more in return than you might normally receive by using another approved contractor.
