Many of my readers write to tell me that they are not in the age group that my columns focus on. It occurs to me that finding your soul mate is just as difficult at 53 as it is at 23 or 73. This column is for the older crowd.
After reading so many of your letters, I want to start by applauding your desire to get out there to meet someone to spend time with. But how do you get started? Think about some of the things you enjoy. Quite often our favorite pastime is the best way to meet people with similar interests.
Go to College of the Canyons and pick up their fall schedule. In the back of the catalog you’ll find a pink section with a listing of classes under Emeritus College. It includes some great ideas for your age group. They also offer three-hour classes for those of us with long-term commitment issues. If you’re male, sign up for either the Tai Chi or the Low Impact Aerobics, both for older adults. I say this because these classes are usually filled with women! If you’re female, now you know the men will be there, too! You’ll improve your health while meeting new people!
Another thing you should consider is our amazing Parks and Recreation here in Santa Clarita. They offer classes in various interest areas. I’ve done it several times and, although I didn’t meet anyone at these classes, I left with some new learning, which is never a bad thing. You might have already received the Seasons catalog for Fall, 2009 in your mailbox. If not, go to the Parks and Recreation office at 23920 Valencia Boulevard, just make sure to call first just to make sure they have catalogs there. The number is 661-259-2480. You might also find one at the library.
Finally, join the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center. They have a ton of weekly activities such as Bingo, Senior Cinema, Chess Club, Computer Training (yes, you really should), Exercise Programs, and even Creative Writing classes that I’m sure you’d enjoy. The worst that can happen is that after going two or three times, you’ll make a new friend or two, either female or male (or a few of both!). They are located at 2900 Market Street, in Newhall and the phone number is 661-259-1647.
The bar scene isn’t the only way to meet people. I hope I’ve given you some helpful ideas.
