Join us for a holiday boutique held on Saturday, December 5, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Valencia Library Community Room, sponsored by the Santa Clarita Artist Association and featuring all 10 guest speakers of the 60 Minutes with an Artist. At the holiday boutique the speakers will be present and displaying their small art pieces to sell.
Ten artists gave one-hour art lectures beginning on February 22, 2009 and were presented every month through November 22. The artists were Laura Wambsgans, Peggy Patti, Tandy Zorba, Don Trout, Romeo Downer, Bob Hernandez, Leland Thomos, Ray Pinjanthuk, Jackie Sofen and Scott Bruckner.
The holiday boutique is being held to feature small pieces of art that each of the 10 artists have created special for this day. Their art will be in different sizes ranging from 3 x 5, 4 x 6, 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 inches and not priced over $25. What a great opportunity to be able to purchase an original piece of art and have been able to hear the different artists give their art lecture. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Don’t miss coming to the boutique and finding a great Christmas gift.
On another note let me say that art should not be just when you have some extra time. Especially for children, art should be a time for real creativity and self-expression and all year long. When elementary children do not have art teachers in their school curriculum it is up to the classroom teacher and their parents to provide a good art program for the child to be able to express them self through art. Art activities can begin by getting necessary materials and letting children draw shapes, color with crayons and have fun experimenting with what they want to express. Drawing can be with pencils, ballpoint pens and crayons and using old grocery store brown paper sacks torn into small pieces as well as old newspapers.
Collecting odds and ends of scraps can be a fun way to begin to build art activities. Buttons, yarn, bottle caps, felt scraps and things that are not potentially dangerous or harmful could be used. As the scraps come in, sort them into containers and have children choose scraps they want to create with. A piece of cloth can be glued down and become part of sailboat, a house, or even an animal. One choice of a scrap or a variety of scraps can become a special creation.
Save Christmas cards and let the designs become collage pictures. Art can be created in many ways and children learn how to express their ideas with different materials.
