On the Town

Students from Monticello Prep School presented their Fourth Annual Shakespeare Festival on Saturday, May 19. 

Several months back, J. David’s Custom Clothiers had a promotion where a portion of the sales from their cus presented a check for $1,575 to Tyler Cordova for the Foundation.

Established in the William S. Hart District about 30 years ago, the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) has been giving high school students across California the chance to learn about and job shadow different career fields through after school classes during the school year. 

In the Hart District, there are multiple Regional Occupation Programs that are made available to students interested in seeing what it would be like to work in different career fields.  Among the many classes, there are a few of them that train students in civil service jobs like firefighters, sheriffs, and emergency medical technicians. 

Thousands were in attendance at the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay For Life of SCV.  The overnight event began on May 19 at Central Park in Saugus, beginning with the Survivor Lap. 

The Trinity Classical Academy Senior class traveled to Italy for the first-ever Trinity Senior Trip, led by Dr. Grant Horner, Trinity Humanities Chair. Since joining the Trinity faculty, Dr. Horner has championed a senior trip as a way to crown our students’ classical studies. To everyone’s delight, Florence, Italy, the birthplace of the Renaissance, was chosen as this year’s destination.

More than 200 SCV residents attended Lockheed Federal Credit Union’s branch grand opening in the Promenade Shopping Center at 27051 McBean Parkway on May 3.  The branch recently moved from the Town Center.  This new location has a significant amount of parking and the same fantastic staff that LFCU members have come to expect.

In 1962, local citizens voted to bring State Water Project to our Valley.  The Agency was organized as Upper Santa Clara Valley Water Agency, and then renamed in 1970 to Castaic Lake Water Agency.

On Saturday, April 21, the SCV Youth Project’s 4th Annual Sweet Charity Cake Auction took place at the Tournament Players Club in Valencia.  At the sweetest fundraiser in Santa Clarita, a spectrum of playful colors and designs, the cakes entered in the auction displayed a whimsical take on charities and local businesses.

For 49 years, Santa Clarita has been awarding outstanding citizens based on their impact on the community.

A large contingent of Soroptimists from the Greater Santa Clarita Valley attended the Soroptimist International regional conference in Long Beach over the weekend of April 21.  Over 200 regional Soroptimists were on hand to observe “The Club” achieve a multitude of top performance awards.

It was a beautiful Saturday as guests gathered at the Valencia Town Center for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides walk on Saturday, May 5.

The Boeing Company’s Thomas Armfield presented a generous $8,330 grant to Emily Wong, Director of Development for the Santa Clarita Youth Orchestra Foundation, who accepted the funds on behalf of the SCVYO and Prelude Strings. As part of the ceremony, the employees of the Boeing High Desert Community were presented with an Appreciation Plaque in acknowledgement of their generous contribution.

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Child & Family Center’s 24th Annual Taste of the Town event, held on May 6 at the beautiful gardens of Mann Biomedical Park in Valencia.  The much-anticipated and highly beneficial Taste of the Town always proves to be a community highlight, putting “fun” back into fundraising with the great amount of participation and attendance from the community.

This year’s Operation School Bell 5K Run/Walk set a record for the number of participants!  Over 450 runners and walkers turned out under sunny skies for the 22nd annual Assistance League 5K Run/Walk to benefit their signature philanthropic program, Operation School Bell. 

Thousands of cowboys and cowgirls saddled up at Wild Wild West SENSES Party in Old Town Newhall on Thursday, April 19.  Main Street turned into the stage for the wildest hoedown in town, as guests gathered at sundown for trick roping, line dancing, gourmet foods, bull riding, shopping and country music.  Film editor Joel Cox and actor Glen Ford were also inducted into the Walk of Western Stars.
