January is the month of changes for all. If nothing else, remember to use the correct date for the New Year! It is the time of year that we feel renewed and we feel the year has new potential for all of us. With a clean slate, most of us begin planning what we would like to accomplish in the New Year, particularly after December, which can be a tough month for many of us.
I think December is very difficult for those of you who had not been successful with infertility treatments. During the holiday season, so much of what you experienced was child focused. Nothing warms the heart more than to see the pure excitement of small children as they visit Santa. For many of us, this also brings a feeling of emptiness, because there is not a child in your life yet. I know I experienced these feelings myself, before we adopted our two children through IAC.
It seems these feelings are true for birthparents that are considering placing their child for adoption. IAC celebrates 25 years of open adoptions this year and our experience has shown January to be a month with a lot of activity from birthparents. This is most likely due to December historically being a month where birthparents usually wait to call us in January after about the middle of December. January holds new hope for our birthparents as well. This is a great time to get started on your adoption.
This past December at our annual holiday open house, I sat near the door and greeted all our adoptive families. It is so wonderful to see the children and visit with their parents, most of whom I knew prior to their adoptions through the adoption information sessions I facilitated. One aspect I was struck by was that so many of them have adopted two children from IAC! It is great to see the joy and happiness of these families formed through open adoption and the IAC.
