With the constantly changing business environment there are some things to consider.  The aspect of a global business environment impacts every business, even if they only serve local customers.

The aspect of increased local competition comes from new business in an area or existing businesses moving out of an area and/or new customers moving to a growing area and some existing customers moving out of an area.

New technologies in your industry can open up opportunities for change and improvement.  As change occurs there is the possibility that new and larger businesses will enter your industry or existing businesses could become larger and provide increased competition.
With changes occurring or looming on the horizon, there may be opportunities within your business environment for you to expand and serve additional customers.  There could also be opportunities for your business to serve existing customers in additional ways.
As changes occur within an industry, this may open up additional opportunities.  A key point is to be able to see these opportunities: to understand that you may have the opportunity to serve additional niches.  This may be dependent on your ability to make very quick and timely adjustments in what you can do and how you do it.

You would have to understand these niches and their needs.  You would need to communicate with the people in the niches to gain an understanding of how they prefer to be marketed to.

A very important thing is to progress to a point where you know the market in your new niche and you can look at things from their perspective.  When you are able to look at things from their perspective and learn to understand their needs, then you can look at how to meet these needs at the highest level.

Consider what resources you will need to obtain or develop to accomplish this.  What level of leadership and management will be required to accomplish this?  How will you need to learn and grow to accomplish this?

It is good to be looking, learning and understanding to be able to see opportunities in new or existing niches.
