During the 1980’s I met Melvin Powers, the owner of Wilshire Publishing Company in the San Fernando Valley.  I always enjoy meeting people that are good people and use their minds in finding ways to benefit others.  He was also the author of several books of his own which he published.
Upon purchasing one of his books and talking with him, we agreed that I would come to his office and meet with him.  First of all, he is a very bright man.  Something became obvious to me.  He was going to take as much time as this meeting required.  He was not rushing on to the next thing he had to do.  Lesson one: Live in the moment.  He talked about his family.  I prefer to know who someone is before I know what they do.  Lesson two: He knew what was important, family.  He then progressed into his publishing business.  He did something very unique in the publishing business at the time.

At the end of each book he had a page where he asked the reader if there was any chapter or thought in the book that could be expanded into a full book.  He tapped into the minds of his readers, his market, his customers for opportunities that might not have been readily evident.  In other words, more people were looking for opportunities.  Lesson three: He was leveraging the ability to see opportunities.

He then discussed how he personally interacted with his market, seeking their input on proposed marketing and coming publications.  Lesson four: Find out what your market wants and needs.  The discussion progressed to another business which he had that was also very successful.  Lesson five: Multiple streams of income.

He talked about the aspect of achieving success and results.  The barrier for many people he felt was fear, which prevented them from starting.  Lesson six: Let go of your fear.

There are many ways to be a catalyst for seeing and acting on opportunities.  Owners, managers and employees can each pursue a pathway for results.
