The weeks leading up to the return to school can be fairly busy for families, and the new school year routine after a long summer often includes a haircut.  If your child or tween will be getting a back to school haircut this year, the tips below will help you get the most out of the experience.

• Make an Appointment: The back to school season is typically a busy season for doctors, retailers and hairstylists.  Be sure you call ahead to book an appointment for your child.  Arrive 10 minutes early, just in case they can work you in a few minutes before your appointment, but be prepared to wait a few minutes just in case your stylist is running a little behind.
• Research Hairstyles: Your tween needs to take the time to find a hairstyle that’s right for them.  Be sure your child knows the upkeep that’s involved with the style.  High maintenance hairstyles may prove to be difficult during the school year, especially if your child is unwilling to wake up in time to manage the haircut.  Suggest styles that work with your child’s lifestyle and available time.  Discuss how often your child will have to get their hair cut as well.
• Sit up straight and keep your hands out of the way!  It’s important to teach your children good haircut etiquette.  Sit with good posture and uncrossed legs.  Crossed legs throw one shoulder lower than the other, which may result in an uneven cut.  It is important to sit very still… if the hairdresser makes an uneven cut, you may get a much shorter haircut than expected!  Keep your hands out of your hair while it’s being cut.  The stylist has a very sharp instrument and can’t use it properly if you are playing with your hair.
• Be clear and honest.  Avoid using terms like “shoulder length”… instead describe what you want by placing a comb at the point where you want the hair to fall.  If you spend only five minutes a day on your hair, say so!  Ask for a low-maintenance cut.
• Use a haircut as a lesson in giving.  If your child has decided they want to cut their long hair short, you can take this opportunity to donate to Locks Of Love!
