What makes a good school? A fundamental list would have to include dedicated teachers and staff, high expectations, a safe environment, solid leadership, involved parents, supportive community, and a vision to see all students learning to promote personal growth and future success. Nothing was ever mentioned in that list that speaks of “stuff.”
The fanciest buildings, the most recent technology, the greatest equipment, and an abundance of materials all pale to the greatest resource a school could ever hope to have… its people.
Saugus High School has been very blessed to have had significant modernization projects in the past (with more coming – including an amazing Performing Arts Center). We are fortunate to be a part of a district that even through recent economic challenges, we are still in better shape than most districts in California. We have outstanding programs, incredible facilities, and enviable opportunities… but it’s still the people who make the investments in students. At Saugus High School, we focus on four distinct areas:
1. Promote Academic Excellence
We have highly qualified faculty members and caring counselors. We offer over 70 sections of Advanced Placement and Honors classes. Our teachers are on the cutting edge with technology in the classroom and we boast an outstanding Career Technical program that allows students to be well prepared for job opportunities.
2. Provide Positive Social Development
Leadership opportunities abound at Saugus. Students are volunteering in the community and learning the value of giving back. All students participate in the freshman SHARE (Anti-Bullying) program and in the sophomore Museum of Tolerance field trip. We also have more than 40 diverse clubs that allow students choices to get involved and work together.
3. Foster Athletic Distinction
Our athletic program has been named “Program of the Year” six years in a row by The Signal. Although much of that comes from the national attention of our Girls Cross Country team (7 straight State Championships), Saugus teams have added 10 CIF Championships and 46 League Championships over the past decade.
4. Cultivate an Appreciation for the Arts
Saugus is proud of its Dance Team (11 National Championships), award winning Band and Color Guard, incredible Theater program, five award winning choirs, amazing journalism department, nationally acclaimed yearbook, creative broadcast video program (SNN), and nationally recognized Literary Magazine.
What makes a good school? Maybe our school motto can best answer that question – It’s a place where, “We don’t just teach students… We develop people who build better tomorrows.”
