It’s flip-flop season! Are your feet ready? Of course, being in the business, we have to point out the sheer joy of granting oneself regular pedicures, but if you’re not able to pamper yourself on a weekly basis, we’ll give DIY tips to keep your feet looking great between professional pedicures.
When feet are hydrated and free from dry patches, they automatically look well-groomed.
Keep a good file near your shower and file your heels before you hop in, while they are still dry. Do this every time you shower, and you will keep your heels smooth and maybe stop snagging your sheets. If your feet ache at the end of the day, soften skin by soaking feet in warm water and add a handful of salts to help soothe tired toes.
Use a buffing block to smooth each nail surface and remove yellow stains. Start with the gritty side, and then switch to the smooth side for shine. You can also use the gritty side to soften skin at the tips of your toes.
To even out shape, file or trim toenails straight across. Use a straight-edge clipper and make three cuts on each nail. Clipping the whole nail at once can cut it too close to the skin, but rounding them like you would your fingernails leads to ingrown toenails, then pain! Smooth the edges with a fine-grit emery board.
Massage a rich foot cream into your skin, paying close attention to the driest areas, including the backs of the heels and around the cuticles. Peppermint is great to revitalize feet! You can also use olive oil instead of cuticle oil to hydrate around your toe nails.
Wipe off any oil or cream left on the nails with polish remover. Then apply a quick-drying topcoat to make nails look shiny or a base coat, two coats of nail color, and a topcoat. Give nails at least 15 minutes to dry before slipping on open-toed shoes (it can take up to two hours for them to dry fully). To speed things up, apply quick-dry drops after the topcoat or soak in cold water to set your polish.
Don’t forget sunscreen! Each year there is an increase in melanoma on feet as more people wear flip-flops.
