More people are turning to permanent makeup to keep looking their best. Maybe it’s because it’s now difficult to get your eyeliner on straight.  Or maybe you have enhanced your brows or lips… Or you just enjoy the freedom that permanent make-up gives you, especially in active summer months! If so, you will want to lengthen the life of your permanent cosmetics by protecting your skin from the sun and improving overall skin maintenance.

Elements that effect permanent makeup and can cause color to fade away more rapidly are the sun, salts and acids. Protecting pigmented areas from the sun is highly recommended as the sun is our biggest enemy for aging! Salts and acids in topical skin care products as well as swimming pool chlorine and salt water also have adverse effects.
Here are eight tips to keep your permanent make-up looking great!
1. Apply sunscreen every day before going outdoors. The ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun fades ink. To protect your skin, apply a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, which means that the sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB rays. Use SPF 30 or higher and water resistant. For best results, you should apply the sunscreen 20 minutes before going outdoors.
2. If you have permanent makeup on your lips, protect it with lip balm that protects you from UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF 30 or higher.
3.  Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can help protect permanent eyeliner and brows.
4. Apply an ointment such as Vaseline on the lips and brows prior to using anti-aging products such as retin-A or those containing AHA’s.
5. When finished with outdoor activities such as swimming, golf or tennis simply rinse face with water so that salt, chlorine or sweat is not drying on the pigmented areas.
6. When applying facial products and peels, apply Vaseline to the pigmented areas, and do not apply facial products on the treated area. Keep them at least a half inch away from the permanent makeup.
7. Avoid chlorinated pools and hot tubs for the first few weeks after the procedure. Chlorine can make the permanent makeup fade.
8. If you have undergone a lip procedure then avoid salty and acidic foods until the lips are healed. Do not use glycolic or fruit acid products on your lips.
