The eyes are the gateway to the soul, so make them pop! Don’t get stuck in the rut of simple black or brown eyeliner. This summer, it’s time to switch it up. Makeup artist Nick Barose, who is the genius behind actress Lupita Nyongo’s gorgeous makeup, has released a few tips for getting Nyongo’s dazzling looks at home.

1. Gray is Great! Don’t be afraid of using a gray liner- it’s a great alternative to black that is softer, more forgiving, and great for daytime looks. Line your upper lashes with a gray gel liner for definition, then smudge it slightly with an angled eyeliner brush so the line doesn’t look too dark or graphic.
2. Plum Gorgeous. Did you know that plum is a neutral? It’s more interesting than brown without being overly dramatic. Line your upper lash line, getting thicker at the corners, and then line the outer corner on your lower lashes. Finally, blend with a cotton swab or q-tip to make the look smoky.
3. Blue and Bluer. Blue is in this season, but don’t limit yourself to just one shade! Line your upper lashes with a dark royal blue for definition, then run a bright aquamarine along the lower lashes for drama.
4. Brown but Bold. If bright colors aren’t your style, update your brown eyeliner to add a little more drama. Line your upper lashes with a brown liquid liner, then trace along the lower lashes with a brown pencil. Blur the lower line a bit to softer the look. This combination of contrasting looks creates just the right amount of definition.
