For centuries people have been fascinated with color. Throughout history women have tried to either enhance their own color or use color to change their appearance. The majority of the population are brunettes and because of this people tend to be fascinated with red and blond hair. The Egyptians and people from India used the henna plant, which grows in Asia, Morocco, and in other North African countries. It is a reddish brown powder obtained from its leaves. Henna was used to achieve a dark red color. The Renaissance women used a mixture of black sulfur, alum and honey then sat in the sun to achieve a more golden color.
Today a person can use color to create any “new look”. One can choose to have a subtle change by just changing the shade from the natural hair color. An example of this is to change the hair color from a dark brown to a light brown. A person can also go to a more drastic change but in choosing a color for oneself, one should look at some factors such as eye color, skin tone and the natural hair color. When discussing the hair’s natural color, stylists refer to the levels of hair color. The numbers range from one to 11. The levels of color are 1- Blue Black, 2- D. Black, 3 – D. Brown, 4- M. Brown, 5- L. Brown, 6 – D. Blonde, 7 – Golden Blond, 8- Light Blonde, 9- Pale Blonde, 10 – Ultra Light Blonde and 11 – Light Platinum Blonde. Skin tones vary as well. People fall into one of these categories of skin tones, they are dark, olive, red, yellow and fair. In choosing a hair color one needs to choose a color that enhances the skin tone. For example, those who are fair skinned with light eyes would look washed out as a platinum blond, but they would look great as either a dark blond or light blonde. When choosing a color darker than the natural color realize that a color swatch that one picks from a style book may look great in the book, but once the whole head is that color the person may not like it as well. It is similar to picking swatches of paint to paint a room. The person liked it on the card but they didn’t realize how dark it would be when painting the whole room.
Remember, there needs to be balance in a person’s appearance where the eyes, hair and skin tone complement each other. Have fun with your hair.
