Healthy Hair is Important if You Want Good Looking Hair…
Do you ever notice someone’s perfect hair, and wonder, why can’t my hair look like that? The key to turning every day hair into fabulous hair is to get it into the best condition possible.
Hair is usually very healthy at the root, but the midshaft and ends tend to become dry and brittle. This is because only your roots are benefitting from the natural oils created from your scalp… the rest of the oils are stripped away when you shampoo. Make sure you only lather the roots of your hair, not the ends… resist the urge to pile your hair on top of your head when shampooing. Instead, pour shampoo on top of your head and massage your entire scalp, especially around the hairline and nape of your neck. Thoroughly rinse… as the shampoo washes from root to tip, you will cleanse the rest of your hair. Hair is more delicate when wet, so be gentle!
Natural oils can’t keep up, so you need conditioner. Conditioner is supposed to mimic what your natural oils are intended to do – hydrate, protect, nourish, and improve the condition of your hair. Washing, drying, coloring and styling, plus countless environmental hazards, all dry out your hair. Just like shampoo, it’s important to only condition where you need it. Start a couple inches down from the root, and condition down to the ends. If your hair is very dry or damaged, you may want to do full deep conditioning treatments until your hair is in better shape. The goal is to make the cuticle lie flat and smooth. The cuticle is made up of layers that look like fish scales. If the layers are open, hair looks dull and dry. When the cuticle is closed, it acts as a protective barrier, and appears silky and shiny.
Also, never wash your hair in extremely hot water. Washing in super hot water will dry out not only your hair, but your skin too, particularly in the upcoming fall and winter months. Washing your hair with cooler water helps maintain the health of your hair as well as the longevity of your hair color, if you use dye. The cooler water closes the cuticle. If you can bear it, finish your shower with a blast of cold water, which helps seal the cuticles and makes your hair polished. The cold water also boosts circulation in your entire body and wakes you up!
