Don’t let Dry Weather Keep You from Having Healthy Hair this Winter!

 As the winter weather approaches us, we quickly become aware of the challenges of environmental stress to our hair. The four main worries are static, frizz, flyaways and dry/brittle hair.
Static- If your hair is less dry, this will decrease the amount of static. Using an ionic blow dryer emits negative ions which connect to positive ions that neutralize the static.
Frizz- Frizzy hair is usually dry and needs to be moisturized. Moisturizers could include conditioners, masks, natural oils or frizz creams. Use a vented brush when blow-drying and be sure to direct the air flow in the direction the hair grows rather than against.
Flyaways- If you spray a shine mist or lightweight hair spray into a small brush or your hand and lightly glide over the hair, it will reduce the amount of flyaways.
Dry/Brittle Hair- This may seem like a never ending battle. With sun exposure and swimming in the summer time and then winter’s cold and overheated indoor atmosphere can dehydrate your hair. One of the most important hair routines we should all implement into our lives is deep conditioning. I recommend a conditioning mask once a week. Your hair will be silkier, smoother and healthier. A conditioning mask is applied to the hair and placed under heat for up to 30 minutes. This allows the conditioner to penetrate the hair’s outer cuticle creating a protective barrier and gives the hair the nutrients it is missing.
The use of sulfate free shampoo and conditioners also aid in retaining moisture in the hair. When using any heating tools; a thermal protectant, cream or spray should be used to help strengthen the hair for the heating process.
