Stress and Adrenal Fatigue
Common symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, and depression can be signs of adrenal fatigue. Cortisol is an important hormone released by the adrenal glands and involved in many functions of the body such as regulation of blood pressure, blood sugar maintenance, immune function, inflammatory response and thyroid function.
In the morning cortisol levels in the body are high to provide the energy needed to be productive throughout the day. During the evening and nighttime cortisol levels in the body are low. Cortisol has been termed “the stress hormone” because it’s also secreted in higher levels during the body’s fight or flight response to stress.
While cortisol is an important part of the body’s response to stress, it’s important that the body’s relaxation response be activated so the body’s function can return to normal to restore and repair.
Unfortunately, we live with chronic stress in our culture. We’re constantly over-worked, under-nourished, exposed to environmental toxins, and worry about issues and others – with no let up. When stress becomes chronic, the adrenal glands do not function properly and cortisol levels in the body may rise and fall unevenly in attempt to maintain balance or can remain elevated to the point of depletion.
The effects of adrenal dysfunction can be profound; weakness, suppression of the immune system, muscle and bone loss, hormonal imbalance, skin problems, autoimmune disorders, and many others.
Red flags such as energy lags, being emotionally imbalanced most of the time, poor sleep or sleep less than seven hours a night, trouble losing weight, use of caffeine or carbohydrates for an energy boost can all indicate adrenal insufficiency.
The good news is that adrenal fatigue can almost always be relieved. Improving nutritional status, reducing stress, exercise, and getting more rest to allow the body to repair can all restore adrenal function. Sometimes with more severe symptoms greater interventions are needed, such as a complete physical exam, adrenal function saliva testing and natural supplementation to bring the adrenal glands back to optimal function.
