Heart-Healthy, Delicious Mediterranean Cuisine!
So you ask, what is Mediterranean cuisine? It is food from the countries which are neighboring or bordering the Mediterranean Sea which total around 30 countries! This region ranges from a wide variety of countries and their cultures so it has produced various cuisines over a thousand years which has contributed something very special to it’s colorful, spirited and complex combination of foods.
In and around the 1970’s America discovered the Mediterranean diet, or Mediterranean cuisine which includes heart-healthy olive oil, protein-rich legumes, fish and whole grains with moderate amounts of wine and red meats. These rich flavors have health benefits that are hard to ignore as you are less likely to develop high blood pressure, have high cholesterol or become obese.
Mediterranean food is not only delicious but it is nourishing and can help you toward good health!
Studies have shown and have been noted by leading scientist that it is one of the healthiest cuisines in the world! Of course, it doesn’t hurt that this food is delicious and the flavor-filled dishes and meals are satisfying and filling.
You can enjoy everything from fresh fish, vegetable dishes, nuts and beans such as chick peas used in huumus, fresh herbs that add lots of flavor with few calories and they are a staple in this cuisine, especially parsley, mint and basil. You can add these herbs to salads, side dishes or to use to flavor a protein dish like, lamb. Also, whole grains are used in Mediterranean cuisine such as bulgur which is a favorite used in tabbouleh salad and coucous and the use of fresh, in-season vegetable are a mainstay of this cuisine as well. Vegetables are generally cooked until just tender and can be dressed with lemon, a little olive oil and salt and pepper… delicious! And, don’t forget fruits.
