How to Improve Your Skin with an IPL Photofacial
So you’re interested in an IPL Photofacial – what is it exactly? An IPL, or intense pulsed light, treatment delivers broadband light through the skin for multitasking rejuvenation. IPL helps restore the youthful glow to photo-aged or sun-damaged skin. It helps decrease facial redness, lessen the appearance of pigmented spots, reduce pore size, and improve texture and fine lines.
IPL delivers high intensity pulses of broadband light that is non-ablative, meaning it doesn’t damage the surface of the skin. The intense light is delivered to the deeper layers of skin, leaving the superficial aspect of the skin untouched. IPL can eradicate red facial veins and flushing, improve acne and rosacea, treat pigmentation, lighten sun spots and reduce fine facial lines.
During treatment, a cool gel is applied to the treated area, and then a pulse of light similar to a rubber band snap is emitted from the hand piece. Generally no local anesthetic is required as most individuals tolerate the treatment well.
People with pale skin that is still somewhat elastic are the best candidates for IPL photofacials. It is also important for patients to have a realistic understanding about what the procedure can do.
Before the procedure begins, you will be given protective eyewear to shield you from the bright flashes of light. A cold gel is then applied to the treatment area, both to lubricate the hand piece and to help control the epidermis during the treatment. Your skin care specialist will apply brief pulses of light to the face through the hand piece. Depending on the size of the area being treated, the procedure may take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.
Other reasons for an IPL treatment include:
• Lightening and removing sun spots, age spots and brown blotches on the face, neck, chest, hands and other areas of the body
• Lightening and reducing redness, rosacea, dilated blood vessels and broken blood vessels on the face, neck and chest
• Helping to control flushing
• Improving skin texture through collagen stimulation and pore size by temporarily reducing oiliness
