Saugus Union School District Receives Grant for Homeless Education

by | Feb 1, 2016 | Education

On November 20, 2015, the Saugus Union School District received a $3,000 grant from the Los Angeles County Office of Education to use toward homeless support services for the 2015-2016 school year.  The grant gives the district the ability to level the playing field for low-income students, giving them the opportunity to succeed alongside their classmates.
Services backed by the grant include tutoring services, childcare scholarships, school supplies, mentoring, transportation, professional development and parent education.  There are 40 documented homeless families in the area, but many more are undocumented or at risk, according to SUSD.
Partnered with Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley, the district began offering after-school programs to homeless youth at Sierra Vista Junior High.
