Smaller Gyms Provide Better Results!
I own a small gym. When I’m in my gym, everything I do is to enhance the experience for my members. I have this mindset because my members and clients are super valuable to me both in our relationship and financially. Any successful small business owner appreciates the heck out of their customers, members and clients. In a competitive fitness industry there are a multitude of choices for consumers. Small businesses that do not provide great value for great products and services fight a losing battle. For the small gym, that value is what I call the four r’s; reasonable rates, results and relationships. Generally, people join gyms like mine for two reasons; to improve their appearance and performance and secondly, to avoid all the elements that come with the big gyms. The crowds, the and the clicks.
I worked for over a decade with the two big box gym chains at district and regional levels of management. We all know they are designed to get you in the door. You purchase a membership and you will most likely get the added bonus of an enrollment and processing fee. Once you’ve purchased your membership, you are offered the upsell of a training package, a bag, a towel, and a protein smoothie. They are brilliant money-makers, but, their popularity is falling fast! I think we all know that most of their money comes from members that are not getting the goals they originally purchased the membership for in the first place. I know people that keep the membership they never use because they say “It’s too cheap to cancel”. What? If I pay for something, I count the value of that thing based on what I get out of it. Which is to say, I would be disappointed to pay for a meal that I never ate. Call me crazy.
The four r’s I mentioned before; reasonable rates, results and relationships. Reasonable rates get a customer in. Relationships keeps them coming in. Consistent focused exercise over time is the number one way to achieve fitness goals.
When members attend the gym and programs they pay for, they get results and value for their investment of time and money. And people like me make a living doing what we love, which is, giving people like you what they want.
