Student and Teacher
After spending 12-20 years being educated, we often feel significant relief when the weight of schooling is lifted from our shoulders. At that point, the last thing we want to think about is learning. We did what we needed to do, and finally it was time to actually live life, not just learn about it. In reality, life is a continual learning process. When we feel we have nothing else to learn (feeling grown up), what is there to look forward to? Let’s continue to grow indefinitely, constantly adding new knowledge and understanding, opening ourselves up to new dimensions in our lives.
In our careers, we seem to understand the value of expanding our knowledge, for our knowledge and skills are our keys to advancement. Learning new technology helps us work more efficiently and effectively, making our lives easier yet more productive. Sometimes, our selfish focus on advancement blinds us to the perspective of others. Are we focusing on what we believe to be in our best interest or what is in our customers’ best interest? We actually find more success when we consider our customers and employees than when we focus only on our bottom line. Do we take time to learn what our customers are seeking (even when they may not be clear as to what might be in their best interest), or do we push our agenda onto them?
The best loving relationships are ones where both partners are eager to acquire and share knowledge. Understanding our partner’s preferences, how those preferences may have developed and what impact they may have on him/her adds quality to our interactions. First, be a student, learning all you can about your partner. Next, be a teacher, sharing understanding of yourself with your partner. When our eyes are fully open, we see opportunities we never thought could exist, adding surprising dimensions to the life we share.
Some of the most influential people in my life have been teachers. I’ve always found myself drawn to those who patiently opened my eyes and shared in my awe of discovery. Learn and love… together.
