Oakmont Lives Life Like It’s Golden

by | May 1, 2016 | On The Town

In advance of the American Diabetes Association “Get Fit, Don’t Sit” day on May 4, Oakmont of Santa Clarita sponsored a Diabetes Awareness and Prevention Day designed for senior citizens, families and caregivers.  Free health screenings, cooking and exercise demonstrations, diabetes workshops and giveaways were provided.
Every 19 seconds someone in the nation is diagnosed with diabetes.  It is a serious disease that strikes nearly 30 million Americans including 1 in 10 people living in the Santa Clarita Valley.  Senior citizens are at an increased risk for developing the disease.  The primary risk factors for Type 2 diabetes are being overweight, sedentary, over the age of 45 and having a family history of diabetes.  The key is to find out early whether you’re at risk or not.
