Seven Tips to Beat the Summer Heat
As we prepare for another summer in Santa Clarita Valley, we can also expect some very hot temperatures. Our pets rely heavily on our awareness and efforts to help them avoid many common issues as summer temperatures rise and can at times become very dangerous. In order to help you and your pets have a safe and enjoyable summer, here are seven tips to help you beat the summer heat:
1. Exercise During Cooler Temperatures – if you are able to, try to do all of your walking, jogging and extended exercising during times of the day when temperatures will be coolest. Typically, 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. windows prove to be the most comfortable.
2. Always Provide Plenty of Water – a great general rule of thumb is to try and ensure your dog is always properly hydrated, but especially in the summer. Dogs should have about 0.5 to one ounces of water per pound of body weight. This means a healthy 65-pound adult dog should have on average 0.25 to 0.50 gallons of water daily.
3. Never Leave Your Pet in a Locked Vehicle – this is not a suggestion, never do this, period. It jeopardizes your pet’s life as temperatures can quickly escalate to be deadly, within 20 minutes a car temperature can reach over 125F.
4. Shave Your Dog – many long hair dog breeds benefit greatly from the reduction of hair as more hair traps more body heat. Depending on the breed a straight shave or design cut may be most appropriate.
5. Add Water Sports Activities – most dogs love their exercise, if yours is one and you can’t fit in a schedule to avoid the heat, take your dog to the beach or if possible a pet-friendly pool. Some of the most common water activities are swimming, dock diving and fetch. Swimming is also great for hip dysplasia.
6. Take a Travel Water Bowl – this is important for any animal traveling in the summer, water is an important part of surviving hot temperatures, consider purchasing a travel bowl to serve water to ensure your pet always has an opportunity to stay properly hydrated.
7. Ice Ice Baby – awful 90s musical reference aside, the truth is, many dogs and some other pet species love ice cubes and ice chips. It keeps them cool and can be a fun alternative to their regular treats.
