Breast Augmentation
For many women, the result of breast augmentation can be satisfying, even exhilarating, as they learn to appreciate their fuller appearance. For many years now, breast augmentation has been one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, giving women the prospect of safely reshaping or enlarging their breasts. Breast Augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breast for a number of reasons:
• To enhance the body contour of a woman
• To correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy
• To balance a difference in breast size
• As a reconstructive technique following breast surgery
• To correct / lift droopy breast
Several variations of the procedure exist, but all consist making an initial incision in the skin and carefully creating a pocket for the breast implant device. This is usually located behind the underlying chest wall muscle. The implant is placed into the pocket using a special funnel that helps to reduce friction on the implant shell, and also helps to reduce the risk of implant contact with the surrounding skin. Once the breast implant is placed, a few stitches close the breast tissue and the incision. The whole procedure takes about an hour. Afterward, a surgical bra will be applied. This is worn for at least four weeks
Breast implant types
Options for breast implants include saline and silicone breast implant devices. A saline breast implant is a silicone shell that is filled with a saline solution, while a silicone breast implant contains silicone cohesive gel.
Surgical options
The breast augmentation surgery itself presents the doctor with several options, each of which will be discussed with the patient beforehand. Factors such as breast implant size and patient anatomy play a role, the doctor will ensure all options are weighed and the ideal conclusion is reached.
