Adulting: Divorce Edition
Going through a divorce can make you want to scream and pull your hair out. But this is not the time to throw a tantrum.
Successful navigation through your divorce requires a lot of “adulting”. So here are some attorney approved pointers for properly adulting through your divorce case:
1. You are allowed to be mad at your ex. You are not allowed to express that anger to him or her through inappropriate texts/email/voice messages; using your child as a weapon of punishment; physical attacks on their person; destructive attacks damaging or destroying their property; verbal or other attacks on new mates; and inundation of communications (i.e. more than two texts per day).
2. You are allowed to fully participate and control your case. You are the consumer. The client. However, you are not allowed to ignore your attorneys advice; miss litigation deadlines; miss discovery deadlines; fail to provide the other party information properly requested; fail to show up to court on time; fail to be organized with your documents in your case. Attorney’s fees are partially dependent on your organization.
3. You are allowed to ask for what you want. You are not allowed more than California law entitles you to. Period… end of story… don’t ask for more! You are wasting time and incurring fees in the process.
4. You are allowed to have frequent and continuing visitation/custody of your child. And so is the other parent, absent facts that indicate otherwise. I hear it all the time that “he was never involved in parenting the kids until now”.
Well, that’s ok because kids need active participation from both parents in their lives and if this is how the other parent gets involved, all the better for your child. Enjoy the times you don’t have your kid. Go out with friends; take a girls weekend or catch up on your DVR recorded shows.
