The Canyon Theatre Guild Presents Long Lost Eras, Runaway Trains and Stampeding Elephants?
Next on the main stage boards at the Canyon Theatre Guild, The Drowsy Chaperone is a farcical romp through the mad-capped world of musical theatre, valentine to the extravagant musicals of the 1920’s. Winner of five Tony Awards, the show is a fond reminiscence of a long lost era when prohibition reigned, liquor flowed like water, showgirls were the Madonna’s of their time, and gangsters were a dime a dozen. The show’s narrator, a mousy, agoraphobic Broadway fanatic seeking a cure for the blues, listens to a recording of an obscure 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. As he listens, he and the audience are transported into the musical and taken on a 90-minute roller coaster ride of song, dance and laughter. Performances are Fridays, August 23, October 21 and October 28 at 8 p.m., Saturdays, October 8 and October 22 at 2 p.m., Saturdays, August 24, October 1, 15, 29 at 8 p.m. and Sundays October 2, 16, 23 at 2 p.m.
Also, on the Family Stage at the Canyon Theatre Guild, Around the World in 80 Days, from the classic tale by Jules Verne, who in the 19th century wrote epic stories of adventure and futuristic scenarios that still captivate the readers of today. Anyone can now circumnavigate the globe in well under 80 hours without breaking sweat, but when Mr. Verne wrote his novel about the trials and adventures of Phileas Fogg, who accepts a wager to travel around the world in just 80 days, the airplane was still a dream for the early flight pioneers. This production pays due homage to the brilliance of the original while highlighting the contemporary relevance of the old-school story. Five actors recreate raging typhoons, runaway trains, stampeding elephants and over 30 different characters in this brilliant stage adaptation as Phileas and his manservant set out on a whirlwind adventure of danger and romance. Witty and hilarious fun from start to finish! You can see this wonderful comedy on Friday October 14 at 8 p.m., Saturdays, August 24, October 1, 15, 29 at 2 p.m., Saturdays October 8, 22 8 p.m., Sundays August 25, October 9 at 2 p.m. and Sundays October 23 and October 30 at 6 p.m.
