Bishop Alemany Celebrates Six Decades of Scholastic Excellence
One of Santa Clarita Valley’s proudest traditions celebrated its Diamond anniversary this year, as Bishop Alemany High School turned 60 in 2016.
Situated in the shadows of the San Fernando Mission, the institution was founded under a different name, as a parish school for girls called Saint Ferdinand. When the school’s status became co-instructional, the name was changed as well, honoring an important personage in the history of the Catholic Church in California: Joseph Sadoc Alemany, O.P.
Born in Spain in 1814 and ordained in 1837, Alemany requested and was sent in 1840 to serve as a missionary in the United States. He worked tirelessly in this role for ten years. He was consecrated Bishop of Monterey in California in 1850 and transferred to San Francisco as its first Archbishop three years later. Alemany was particularly concerned with providing quality, affordable education for the youth within his care. He dedicated 30 years of service to them, dying in 1888 — intellectually accomplished and boldly dedicated to creating a society where people of every status were enabled to live up to their full potential.
It is this illustrious legacy that Bishop Alemany High School strives to emulate today. Co-educational since 1970, Bishop Alemany boasts a racially and culturally diverse student body of about 1400. Its tradition of excellence manifests itself in a full Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum in addition to a strong college-preparatory program — they are one of only two schools in the LA Archdiocese with AP Capstone distinction and hold the honor of being 13-time Academic Decathalon Champs. In 2015, they added a 4-year Engineering program, and this year will introduce a 4-year Biomedical Science project-based program.
The school maintains the perfect blend of study and athletics — generating Division 1 level sports programs which include Pac 5 Division Football, and success as Men’s and Women’s Basketball State Champions. On-site facilities include a gym, football, baseball, soccer, and softball fields, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, and a swimming pool for competitions and water polo.
The school’s commitment to excellence is built upon a solid framework and foundation of faith. Catholic identity and devotion to service and social justice is in evidence throughout the Bishop Alemany’s school community each and every day, just as it has been since the doors opened in 1956.
Bishop Alemany High School welcomes students of all faiths and is currently accepting applications. For more information about the school, visit their website at http://www.alemany.org, call 818-365-3925 or email admissions@alemany.org.
