Ultherapy: The Beauty of Sound
We are often approached by men and women wondering how to improve the sagging skin on their neck and jowls. Very few patients have such significantly lax facial and neck skin that they require plastic surgery. Most patients would benefit from a non-invasive skin tightening procedure, without the risks or expense of surgery. For those patients, we offer Ultherapy.
As the skin matures, collagen fibers that provide internal support become worn resulting in sagging. Ultherapy is the only non-invasive procedure FDA approved to tighten and lift skin under the chin, the neck, the brow, and the chest. Ultherapy works from the inside out, bypassing the surface of the skin and delivering focused ultrasound energy to the same deep collagen layer that is typically sutured in a surgical facelift. The skin’s response to this energy is to stimulate the growth of fresh, new collagen and elastin, lifting and tightening the skin over a 3 to 6 month time period. This results in a sharper jaw line and reduced under chin sag.
Treatments take between 1 and 2 hours. Patients are given a choice of light oral sedatives to relax them or nitrous oxide sedation to make the procedure more comfortable. If oral sedation is preferred, we do ask that the patient have someone drive them home. Post procedure there is absolutely no down time. Patients may feel some slight tenderness in the area after the treatment, but are not required to avoid sun exposure or apply special products.
In the early days following treatment, patients commonly report some lifting, and as an added bonus, a smoothing out of fine lines. While this immediate “plumping effect” can be temporary, it signals that the beneficial process of new collagen generation has begun. Skin tightening is reported to continue over the next three to six months following the procedure.
