Sparkling Water and Your Teeth
Keeping yourself hydrated and drinking plenty of water is certainly a healthier choice. But what if it’s sparkling water? Whether its Perrier, Pellegrino or club soda, the bubbles create an effervescence that’s pleasant and distracting. However, there is a cost to the fizzy fun entertainment of these drinks.
Even when it’s unflavored, fizzy water, they all contain carbonic acid. Carbonic acid is what gives these drinks their bubbles. That acidity can gradually wear away tooth enamel. The good news is that it is a relatively weak acid. It’s certainly less acidic than soda including diet soda. However, if they are flavored with citric or other acids, it increases its strength making it harsher and more corrosive on your teeth.
The best advice is to keep sparkling water to a minimum and stick to meal times only. Any time in between would be best to stick with plain water. You can also swish with plain water afterwards to help reduce the pH balance.
Other factors in preventing decay and tooth erosion include how much sugar you consume daily with your diet, your oral hygiene habit, whether you get enough fluoride from water or toothpaste, and your overall diet of vegetables, fruit and lean protein.
Knowing what you put in your body and making a conscious decision to be healthier is the best way to be cavity free.
