Santa Clarita Valley Residents Benefit from UCLA’s Newest Imaging Center
UCLA Health-Santa Clarita Imaging and Interventional Center is UCLA’s newest imaging center, offering comprehensive imaging services, including MRI, CT and PET CT, radiography (X-ray), ultrasound, interventional procedures, bone-density scanning and complete breast-imaging studies.
The breast-imaging center features the latest technology, including tomosynthesis 3-D mammography to provide screening mammograms for women with no symptoms and diagnostic mammograms for women with symptoms such as breast pain or breast lumps.
We also offer ultrasound, breast MRI, minimally invasive needle biopsies (non-surgical) using either ultrasound, mammography (including 3D) or MRI to guide the procedure and ultrasound- guided cyst aspirations. A board-certified and fellowship trained breast imaging physician will interpret your images.
How often should a woman age 40-plus and of average breast-cancer risk have a screening mammogram? That question has led to considerable controversy — and differing recommendations from various organizations – causing understandable confusion.
The American College of Radiology (ACR) and Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) continue to recommend that women get yearly mammograms starting at age 40. This affords the maximum benefits of reduced breast cancer deaths, less extensive treatments for detected cancers, decreased chance of advanced disease at diagnosis and discovery and treatment of high-risk lesions. This approach makes sense because breast-cancer incidence increases substantially around age 40. Women should continue with screening mammograms as long as they are healthy and physically able to have the procedure performed. Therefore, specific recommendations for screening mammography should have no upper-age limit.
For high-risk women, including those with a strong family history of breast cancer, mammography may begin earlier. Additionally, high-risk women and those with dense breast tissue may be candidates for other screening methods such as ultrasound or breast MRI. Together, you and your health provider should discuss and create a plan to ensure your continued health.
UCLA Health-Santa Clarita Imaging and Interventional Center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours for MRI procedures. The center accepts most insurance plans and cash payments.
