Beware of Box Color
It’s full of empty promises and half-truths.
No hair color, professional or otherwise, is one size fits all. Yet, box color seems to be marketed as such which leads to unpredictable results. When a box color is applied by a non-professional, or the person applying it is also the one getting their hair colored, the application will most likely be less than perfect. Spots can be missed or color can be placed on areas that shouldn’t be colored creating unnecessary damage. Not to mention, it creates a huge mess at home.
When a consumer buys a box of color, they are looking solely at the picture on the box for the color they want. They don’t actually know what color is in the box, and aren’t taking into consideration what their current color is.
When I am preparing to mix up color for a client, I am taking note on the condition of the hair, how many shades they want to go lighter or darker, how much grey they have, what colors are present in their hair, etc. Once I have analyzed all aspects of a client’s hair and lifestyle, I can mix a color that is perfectly tailored to them using the necessary strength of color to get the job done. With a box, you don’t get to choose what strength of developer you need or what undertone is in the color you’re using to enhance or cancel out in your current hair color.
Box color doesn’t warn of the damage of going lighter or the consequences of going darker without taking the proper steps to ensure you get even lift and/or deposit of color without any disastrous results. It won’t warn you that it’s going to turn your hair orange, green or black, etc.
