My Experience with Cancer and Cryotherapy
It’s been exactly three months since I found out I had a malignant bone tumor (osteosarcoma) in my pelvis. On May 17, I went into surgery to have the tumor removed along with 50 percent of my pelvis on my right side. The surgeon had to reattach all of my gluteus medius and parts of my gluteus maximus and minimus, which normally attach to the pelvis, to my obliques. I knew this would prove to be quite the recovery and would change my life forever.
I was told by the surgeon that I would most likely need a cane to get around for the rest of my life. I was told I would definitely have a limp for the rest of my life and I would most likely never be able to run again or do many of the physical activities that I enjoyed on a regular basis.
I was in the hospital for almost a month due to complications from an infection and lost about 25 pounds of muscle. I had to relearn to walk which is a very humbling experience for a very physically active 37-year-old but I stayed positive through the experience and never stopped believing that I can get back to my old self.
I took my physical therapy very serious and continue to today. I spend anywhere from two to three hours twice a week strengthening my muscles and learning to deal with the new way my muscles are connected. I quickly progressed from a walker, to crutches and then a cane. As of the end of July I officially hung my cane up and practiced walking without and have not gone back since. My limp is almost non-existent and feel as if I will be running in no time.
A major factor in my rapid recovery is my use of whole body cryotherapy and infrared sauna. I did cryotherapy every day, sometimes twice which kept the pain, soreness and inflammation to a minimum allowing me to really push myself through physical therapy without discomfort. It also kept my intake of pain pills to minimum.
To make a long story short, a positive attitude and whole body cryotherapy are the two most important factors in my recovery. I never let the doctor’s prognosis ever let me stop believing that I would get back to my normal way of life and with hard work and the proper recovery program (So Cal Physical Therapy and MEND Cryotherapy) I am on my way to running and living an active life again.
When I started MEND Cryotherapy last year with my brother, I understood, felt and witnessed the benefits that it provided but never thought I would need it to the extent I have these past few months. Recovery has become my business and I take it very serious and this life changing event has given me a whole new outlook on life, recovery and career. I understand more now than ever the effects chronic pain and inflammation have on a person’s life and I wanted to share my story in hopes of motivating others to take their recovery as serious as I did to regain mobility and quality of life.
