The Importance of Exfoliation
We hear the word all the time, but how do we ensure that our skin is being properly exfoliated? When should we exfoliate and how often? These are questions that we’re being asked every day in the spa and it’s important that everyone knows the value of exfoliation of the face and entire body. It is also very important that exfoliation be done properly in the spa and at home.
To exfoliate simply means to remove the dead cells that stick to the outermost layer of the skin. The skin is the largest organ of the body and as such, is constantly working to renew dead and dying cells. The rejuvenation of cells takes place in the dermis, which is the layer of skin far beneath several layers of epidermis. As we follow through the layers of the epidermis, the cells go through different phases until close to the surface where they are dead or dying. That’s the reason we often have a whitish cast on the skin. The dead cells would naturally flake off, and many do, but due to the sebum in our pores and the process of perspiration, many of those cells are stuck to the surface.
So, when and how should we exfoliate? Cells are dying every day and so we should try to exfoliate face and body every day. The amount of pressure and “scrubbing” action that we use should be very gentle. Aggressive scrubbing with some products that contain ground nut shells and other harsh ingredients can actually tear the surface and interfere with the normal function of the skin. The skin of the face is, of course, much more vulnerable to this kind of harsh treatment, but it’s important to keep in mind that the entire body should be treated with care.
Choose products that are very gentle to the skin and rub lightly. Many products now contain Glycolic and other acids that remove those dead cells chemically so no rubbing is necessary. Consult your skin care professional to find the best ingredients for your skin type. Not every product is good for everybody.
