A Grocery List for Balancing Hormones
The body’s hormones are like a seesaw. When they’re perfectly balanced, the body works as it is designed too. When they’re imbalanced, the body may begin experiencing symptoms. Making sure a few important items are on the grocery list is the key in helping hormones get back to normal.
High estrogen levels in the body can cause symptoms of bloating, breast tenderness, decrease sex drive, and headache. Consider adding green tea, and turmeric to help rid the body of excess negative estrogen. Adding ground flax, chia seeds, non-psyllium fiber supplement, and cruciferous vegetables will also assist the body to eliminate harmful estrogens.
Low progesterone levels can cause symptoms of PMS, insomnia, breast tenderness, and brown spotting as the period begins. To improve progesterone levels in the body, eat foods rich in B6 and vitamin C. Good amounts of B6 can be found in walnuts, whole grains, lean red meat and spinach. Foods higher in vitamin C than the commonly known orange choice are papaya, broccoli, kale, Brussel sprouts, and kiwi.
Low testosterone symptoms include low energy, decrease interest in sex, hair loss and difficulty losing weight for both men and women. Eating foods rich in zinc may help raise testosterone levels. Three ounces of lean pot roast or short ribs can provide a substantial amount of the daily zinc needs.
High levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body can cause symptoms of fatigue, memory problems, insomnia, and weight gain. Foods to control cortisol levels include spinach, omega-3 fatty acids, beans, citrus fruits, dark chocolate, and holy basil. This tasty herb is part of a class of herbs called adaptogens that help reduce the production of the stress hormones.
DHEA is a precursor hormone to estrogen and testosterone and also helps to counteract the negative effects of cortisol. Low DHEA levels may cause low energy, loss of memory, low sex drive, and joint pain. A food plan that includes complex carbohydrates, good fats and rich in omega-3 fatty acids can increase the level of DHEA significantly.
Our bodies are calibrated to have balanced hormones and many of our daily dietary habits can play a significant role in how balanced hormones are in the body. One way to improve the balance of hormones in the body is through eating the right foods.
