Should Your Hair Be Clean or Dirty Before a Color Service?
Since the beginning of my hair career, there has always been this myth it’s better to have your hair dirty for a hair coloring service. I don’t know when that myth started or why, but my guess is that it was because hair color was harsh and added oils from a person’s scalp helped to minimize irritation to the scalp and damage to the hair.
Today, hair color is much more advanced and gentle with added conditioning ingredients. There are also new products on the market now to temporarily cover gray roots and dry shampoos to extend the time in between washings.
So maybe in the past that myth was once true, but in this day and age with all the products we are layering on our hair, it’s vital that the hair is clean prior to having your hair colored.
How can we possibly expect hair color to cover gray, stay vibrant and last when we are putting the color over a layer of dry shampoo, root sprays, super strong hairsprays and even hard water build up?
It’s not necessary to wash your hair immediately before. Washing it the night before an appointment and forgoing styling products or root cover ups will suffice. However, if that isn’t possible due to a busy schedule, I offer a color-prep service where I will shampoo the hair with a gentle yet powerful sulfate-free chelating shampoo that removes buildup from hair products and surface minerals as well as opens the cuticle in preparation of a chemical service. Next, I prep the hair with a powder to gel, patented vitamin C rich technology, which will ready the hair for unprecedented color coverage and longevity.
