Signs a Divorce Filing May be Forthcoming
The New Year usually brings upon some reflection of the past and the future. Customarily, January and February of each year are often the busiest times for family law attorneys. Spouses decide they need a fresh start and what a better time than the New Year. There are some signs you may see, to let you know if your spouse is on the verge of filing. It’s important to take in these cues to help you prepare your own case, as sometimes the best defense is a good offense. The typical signs are:
1. He/she has a new password on their phone.
2. They stop talking on the phone when you walk into the room.
3. They start taking a more pro-active approach to finances.
4. They start asking about documents such as the mortgage statement and old tax returns.
5. They start using “big words” you have never heard them use before, like “equalization” or “standard of living”.
6. Mail starts suddenly going to the “office”.
7. They suddenly take a greater interest in the kids’ activities, school events and medical appointments.
8. Bad news is transmitted in attempt to stack the deck against a spouse. If your spouse says the successful business is doing poorly and mentions how much less it’s making, it could be to set up your expectations about a possible settlement.
9. If your spouse is withdrawing a lot of money from the joint line of credit on a home, it could not only be a clue that he/she is socking away funds for a divorce lawyer, but ensuring that you won’t have the liquid resources to hire your own. You should monitor a home equity line of credit and immediately freeze it if you see any strange activity on it.
