Cryotherapy and Pain Relief – An Introduction
It’s one thing to hear that pro athletes like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Floyd Mayweather Jr. regularly use cryotherapy for muscle recovery and pain relief – but what about the men and women suffering from sciatica, rheumatic inflammation of joints, psoriatic arthritis, tendinitis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and chronic back and neck pain?
To me, these are the heroes I love helping the most. They get up every day, go to a job without a multi-million-dollar paycheck, suffer in silence… and then do it all over again. Many do lasting harm to their internal organs, popping pills that only mask the symptoms. Their pain manifests not just physically, but mentally, too – depression and anxiety are often bookended bedfellows of chronic-pain survivors.
Cryotherapy offers clinically-proven hope for those who need it the most, affecting both immediate and long-term pain relief. After your two-to-three-minute treatment in the cryo chamber, pain is instantly relieved thanks to direct contact with safe gasiform nitrogen, which lowers the skin’s surface temperature by 30 to 50 degrees. It’s like an icepack for your pain – and it feels amazing! But the real magic is what happens next.
Your skin’s surface tissue and muscles constrict during your treatment, causing a chain reaction, forcing your blood toward your core. The process speeds toxins and other inflammatory properties into your blood stream to be processed and naturally eliminated. This is what can keep you pain free – and off meds – long after you leave the cryo chamber.
With inflammation now significantly reduced, the body gets to work inactivating the collagenase enzyme, decreasing tendon tissue in rheumatic diseases – reducing pain and inflammation even more. In contrast, norepinephrine increases production, acting as a natural, drug-free pain reliever. It partners with a coordinating kick in endorphins, which produce an analgesic (pain-reducing) effect from head to toe.
The results are compounded every time a pain sufferer visits ICE: More inflammatory properties are removed, more revitalized blood is rushed to the damaged sites to work on repair, more enzymes are released to soothe the nagging aches and more relief is felt – for longer periods of time.
