Curls are a Girl’s Best Friend
If you have naturally curly hair you know that your curls are happiest when they are hydrated. Most of us curly girls have suffered through frizzy days and a lot of bad haircuts. You’ve probably straightened your hair with a flat iron and you may have tried to go short (and wished you hadn’t). There are a few tricks to a great naturally curly hairstyle. Turns out you can wear your hair short, you can get a few bangs cut in and all you have to do is go to a curly hair specialist like me! The secret lies in getting a great haircut and using the correct cocktail of products that work for your texture and desired style.
The first rule in hair cutting is the shorter the hair the more volume it will have. Long hair weighs down, equaling less pouf! If your hair is unruly try a longer style and see if it behaves better. Layers provide movement. Do you want curls to be full of bounce and spring? A long layer hair cut allows your hair to move. Shorter layers give more movement and volume since more weight is removed. Layers also allow for shaping curly hair. Shape is important to curly hair it determines the style and where the curl will live. The biggest mistake with curly hair is using a straight hair technique. The textures are different and will fall and dry differently so why use the same cutting technique to only find out that once curly hair dries it bounces back. With the right curly girl haircut, styling curly hair can be easy. Apply the product that is best recommended for your texture and desired look, then either twist or diffuse the hair. Simply cup and squeeze your curls in the palms of your hands adding more product if needed. Always let some of the hair air dry to reduce fewer chances of frizz. Curly hair tends to be dry and therefore vulnerable. All curly hair needs intense moisturizing. As you likely well know by now, when curly hair is dry it breaks and frizzes. The secret to keeping frizz at bay is moisture. Moisture, moisture, moisture – keep the curls happy. At least once a week deep condition your curls. Also stay away from products that contain drying alcohol and sulfates like DevaCurl. If your plan to care for your curls some of your staple products should be non-sulfate shampoo, a leave-in conditioner, a deep conditioner and a styling product involving lipids or silicone. All either keep the hair moisturized or protect the cuticle from humidity which can wreak havoc on curly hair. Humid air causes cuticles to expand, which causes frizz.
