The Longest Day
Thursday, June 21 is the summer solstice, which marks the longest day of the year. The Alzheimer’s Association promotes an annual “Longest Day” campaign on this date to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. Businesses and individuals are invited to participate in this global movement by raising funds to advance research toward the first survivor of Alzheimer’s.
As the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research, many senior living communities will hold events on a regular basis to support the Alzheimer’s Association. This year Oakmont of Santa Clarita will host a Bingo and Tacos event on the Longest Day to kick off their fundraising efforts for the Santa Clarita Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Last year, Oakmont raised over $11,000 in support of the Alzheimer’s Association as a result of these efforts. The Longest Day is all about love. Love for all those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. On the summer solstice, team up with the Alzheimer’s Association and select any activity you love — or an activity loved by those affected — to help end Alzheimer’s. Together, we will raise funds and awareness for care and support while advancing research toward the first survivor of Alzheimer’s
Often, in addition to fundraising, senior living communities that offer memory care services will host monthly support groups for family members and caregivers. These meetings are meant to provide a safe space for individuals to connect with others who are impacted by memory-related diseases. Support groups can serve as an important resource for those who may not have others in their lives who can relate to the effects of Alzheimer’s.
Senior living communities may also provide educational presentations, often led by the Alzheimer’s Association, to educate family members and the general public on the disease itself and ways to effectively cope with it. Topics range from how to communicate with individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s, to how to assist them in leading a meaningful life in spite of the disease.
Oakmont is a luxury senior living community in Santa Clarita offering independent living, assisted living and memory care. Oakmont of Santa Clarita has a comprehensive memory care program that includes specialized activities based on music, sensory, and tactile stimulation. Compassionate and specially-trained staff engage residents with the extra care and patience they may need. The community, the dining experience, and social connection continue to be the foundation of our program. All residents at Oakmont enjoy five-star amenities like a salon & day spa, movie theater, restaurant-style dining, gardens and walking paths, a pet park and more.
