How to Keep Your Hair Hydrated in the Heat of Summer
Adapting to weather changes is a core part of day-to-day life. In the same way we take our winter coats out to shield us from icy rain and snow or put our swimsuits on to soak in the golden haze of summer, so must we adjust our hair care practices and techniques for the weather.
Believe it or not, extremely hot or cold water can leave our strands dry and parched, leading to breakage and damage. Summer heat may overly dehydrate our hair and excessive sun exposure may lead to browning of our strands. Winter is no saint either! Extremely cold weather can freeze the moisture in our strands and in areas of low humidity our hair may become frail and weak, causing to breakage.
But we aren’t in the business of letting our curls suffer now, are we? Here are a few tricks I use to keep my strands moisturized in all types of extreme weather:
Deep condition
I deep condition weekly at the very least. Deep conditioning refers to the process of applying conditioning treatment to the length of our hair usually for extended periods of time so as to saturate our strands with water and emollients.
Seal
I seal my hair with a light oil in order to keep all my hair’s moisture locked to my strand. I like to use light, natural oils like olive oil and coconut oil.
Hydrate
I drink lots of water. Our internal water levels affect the health of our scalp and consequently the state of our hair. A dry, itchy or flaky scalp may be a sign of internal dehydration, so I always guzzle my gallons to keep my hydration levels high.
Cover up
I keep my strands covered your strands once in awhile. In summer heat, I always wear a hat or a bandana to protect my strands from excess sun exposure. In cold weather, I keep the ends of my hair tucked away and I wear satin-lined scarves and beanies.
