Classic Lashes Versus Volume Lashes
What is the difference between classic lashes and volume lashes? This is by far the most common question I get from clients.
Classic lashes (also known as 1 to 1 or 1:1 or individual lash extensions) are a method where 1 lash extension is glued to 1 natural lash. Classic lashes are perfect for clients who already have a lot of lashes, but want to add more length (up to 17mm). Classic lashes look more natural.
For Volume lashes (also known as Russian volume), multiple lashes are applied to one single natural eyelash individually isolating one natural eyelash at a time by using very thin lashes. If two eyelash extensions are applied to one natural lash it’s described as 2D, if three eyelash extensions are applied to one natural eyelash then it’s described as 3D etc.
Volume lashes are lighter, fluffier and give the client a fuller look. Volume lashes are perfect for clients who don’t have a lot of lashes, have sparse lashes, bald spots or just want a more dramatic look without having to use a thicker lash.
When getting a classic lash set, a 0.15 to 0.25 mm diameter lash is applied to 1 natural lash. With volume lashes, 0.05 to 0.10 mm lashes are applied in a fan shape to 1 natural lash. Volume lashes are actually lighter than classic lashes. This is nothing like “cluster” lashes where a chunk of lashes are glued to a bunch of your natural lashes!
For your investment-wise, classics certainly appear to cost cheaper than volume lashes since the materials for volume lashes cost more and they take more time for the application. However, keep in mind classic lashes have limited thickness, therefore splashing out a little more for added volume might achieve the look you’re after. Classic lashes also tend to get “spidery” quicker than volume lashes, meaning more regular refills are needed. However, brushing regularly with a lash wand is the best way to maintain classic lashes as long as possible and helps to maintain their shape.
However, for no matter what, everything is up to your preference and needs and you can consult with your lash extensions artist for optimal results.
