Avoiding the Holiday Burn Out
The holidays are a time for joy and celebration and also a great deal of stress. There doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to accomplish everything that needs to be done. Nourishing meals are often neglected or replaced by fast food and sometimes our exercise and fitness routines are left undone. As much as we enjoy being with family and friends those parties take a toll on our skin and general health. We don’t get as much sleep as we are accustomed to and it starts to show in our faces and overall demeanor.
The by-product of all of this stress is dry or broken-out skin, aching muscles and mental depression. Stress plays a huge role in the deterioration of our skin’s cells by undermining the ability of the body to fight free radicals. This will eventually lead to illness, but we always see the first signs on our face.
The food that we do or do not consume, the beverages that we drink, the lack of oxygen that we subject ourselves to in the party atmosphere will rob our bodies of essential nutrients that keep us running at our peak level.
How do we get through the holidays without burning ourselves out entirely?
Here are a few simple suggestions for looking and feeling better during these busy times. First and foremost, drink plenty of water! Eight glasses of eight ounces per day is the minimum in order to maintain a healthy glow. If you have been drinking alcohol, drink as much water as you can, it won’t counteract the damage but will help to keep you hydrated. Second, make time for a warm bath filled with mineral salts to help ease tense muscles. Lighting some aromatherapy candles around the tub will also soothe and help you to relax.
After a bath or shower, smooth some body oil or lotion all over-especially on your feet and hands as they are probably working overtime. Take a few moments each day to concentrate on your breathing and make sure that you are taking slow, deep breaths. You will be amazed at how calm and collected you feel afterward. Lastly, don’t forget your moisturizer. Whether your skin is dry or oily, young or old, you need to nourish and protect it from the elements all day long.
