Infusing More Light Into the Darkness
In the story of Hanukkah, we learn about forces of evil versus forces of good when the Jews weren’t allowed to celebrate their religious heritage. A long time ago, they had to fight tyranny, oppression and intolerance. Sadly, it seems as if not much has changed through the ages. Evil acts still happen rampantly like the recent mass shootings of innocent people celebrating life’s special moments in their synagogue and in a club. Understandably, when such horrific events happen we feel desperate and helpless. But it is precisely in the midst of such chaos and suffering that we can tip the scale in favor of goodness with a voice of objectivity and clarity. A remedy to such pain is doing more acts of loving kindness and infusing more light into the darkness. In the words of the singer and song writer Leonard Cohen, “There’s a crack in everything and that’s how the light gets in.”
It’s up to us to bring back balance and restore our faith in humanity with grace and holiness. We can learn to respect and support each other no matter how different we feel and think; have integrity to stand for what’s just even if we’re in the minority and dare to be different as the Macabees did and ultimately prevailed.
Our sages teach us that “a little light dispels a lot of darkness.” We all need to carry a torch of light daily, not just on Hanukkah and the Festivals of Lights. We’re reminded to increase the light by becoming more mindful of our choices, our words and our deeds. With respect, love, empathy and tolerance for our fellow humans, we collectively and personally benefit and grow.
Wishing you all peace and light!
